Don’t Miss the 5th October Deadline: Self-Assessment Registration Explained

As autumn begins, many business owners and individuals face an important tax deadline that can easily slip under the radar. If you’ve recently become self-employed, started renting out a property, or earned additional untaxed income in the last tax year, 5th October 2025 is the date you need to know.

What’s Happening on 5th October?

This is the deadline to register for Self-Assessment with HMRC if you need to declare income for the tax year that ended on 5th April 2025.

You’ll need to register if:

You became self-employed during 2024/25.

You started receiving rental income.

You earned dividends, savings, or investment income not taxed at source.

You had capital gains to declare.

Your income was over £100,000.

Failing to register on time could result in penalties and interest, even before you file your first tax return.

What Happens After Registration?

Once registered, HMRC will issue you with a Unique Taxpayer Reference (UTR) and set up your Self-Assessment account. This will allow you to:

File your return online.

Track your tax liabilities.

Make payments securely.

Remember, registration is only the first step, the actual tax return deadlines are:

31 October 2025 – Paper returns.

31 January 2026 – Online returns and payment of tax due.

Why It Matters This Year

With the Finance Act 2025 introducing big changes, including higher Capital Gains Tax rates, National Insurance adjustments, and the phasing out of the remittance basis, more people than ever may fall into Self-Assessment for the first time.

If you’re unsure whether the changes affect you, it’s worth getting advice now rather than waiting until the January rush.
