MTD for Income Tax: How JSB Accountants Can Help You Prepare for April 2026
From 6 April 2026, Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax will introduce a major change for many UK sole traders and landlords. Those affected will be required to keep digital records and submit quarterly updates to HMRC, replacing the traditional annual Self Assessment process.
While the start date may feel some way off, preparation before April 2026 is essential to ensure a smooth transition.
What Is Changing Under MTD for Income Tax?
MTD for Income Tax means:
Income and expenses must be recorded digitally
Quarterly updates must be sent to HMRC using MTD-compatible software
A final declaration must be submitted after the end of the tax year
The new rules apply to individuals with self-employment and/or property income over £50,000, with further expansion planned in later years.
What Happens Before 6 April 2026?
Although quarterly submissions don’t begin until April 2026, there are important steps to take beforehand.
Now – March 2025: Awareness and Planning
This is the time to understand whether MTD will apply to you. Review your income levels, assess how you currently keep records, and begin conversations about how your processes may need to change.
April 2025 – March 2026: Getting Set Up
HMRC will begin contacting taxpayers they believe will need to comply from April 2026. During this period, you should:
Choose MTD-compatible software
Start recording income and expenses digitally
Decide whether you will submit quarterly updates yourself or use an accountant
Some taxpayers may also choose to join the MTD pilot to gain early experience.
January – March 2026: Final Preparation
In the final months before MTD goes live, all systems should be in place. This includes software setup, Government Gateway access, and clear processes for maintaining digital records.
6 April 2026: MTD Goes Live
From this date:
Digital record-keeping becomes mandatory
Quarterly reporting applies to the 2026–27 tax year
No submission is required on 6 April itself — it simply marks the start of the new system
Your 2025–26 Self Assessment tax return will still be filed under the existing rules.
