🚨 Oops! Missed the UK Tax Deadline? Here’s What You Need to Know! 🚨
Hey, we get it, life gets busy, and tax deadlines sneak up on us! But if you missed the 31 Jan 2024 Self-Assessment deadline, here’s what happens next (and how to fix it ASAP!).
❌ Late Filing Penalties – What Happens If You’re Late? ❌
⏳ 1 day late – £100 fine (yep, even if you don’t owe any tax!)
⏳ 3 months late – £10 per day, up to £900 😬
⏳ 6 months late – £300 or 5% of your tax bill (whichever is higher)
⏳ 12 months late – Another £300 or 5% of what you owe!
💸 Late Payment Penalties – Don’t Let Interest Pile Up! 💸
If you filed but haven’t paid, you’ll get extra charges:
🔻 30 days late – 5% of your tax bill
🔻 6 months late – Another 5%
🔻 12 months late – Yep, another 5%!
⚠️ Plus, HMRC adds daily interest until it’s all paid off. The sooner you sort it, the better!
🤔 Missed the Deadline? Here’s What to Do!
✅ File ASAP – Every day counts! Avoid more penalties.
✅ Even if you owe nothing, you still need to file (or you’ll get fined £100!).
✅ Think you don’t need to file? Call HMRC to cancel your return, but check with an accountant first.
🛑 Can You Appeal the Fine?
Yes! If you have a good reason, HMRC might cancel your penalty.
Valid reasons include:
✅ Illness or a hospital stay
✅ A family bereavement right before the deadline
✅ HMRC website issues
✅ Fire, flood, or theft stopping you from filing
✅ Disability-related delays
🚨 NOT valid reasons:
❌ “I forgot”
❌ “I didn’t get a reminder”
❌ “I didn’t have the money”
⚠️ What If You Just Ignore It?
Bad idea! HMRC can estimate your tax bill and chase you for payment, even if their guess is way off. 😬
💼 Self-employed? If you made £1,000+, you probably need to file. Check using HMRC’s online tool.
👉 Don’t let this stress you out, just take action now! The sooner you sort it, the less you’ll pay.
